I just started watching a couple of days ago, so haven't seen the whole plot-arc, but what really strikes me is the way kawaii is made into an embodied force in this fictional Tokyo rather than an invisible social force as in life. The episodes about Chii getting a job are very bizarre as a depiction of what cute-ness separated from sexuality would have to be. The series is a beautifully rendered expression of Japanese notions of cuteness and sexuality, that resonates with its several audiences in an odd way. I have a couple of posters of Chii in her dresses drawn in the style of the manga. She looks very pretty in them. I don't have them up right now though. I saw the anime before the manga. This is better for me because, despite the manga being better, I don't think any less of the anime.
